Auction Sites History

The history of online auction mania has started with a few sites that quickly gained immense popularity. These sites are very popular today because they offer the experience of placing the lowest price on brand items and getting many discounts for cool merchandise. The most popular and most visited auction site today is, of course, ebay.com.

Ebay.com was the first website in the history of online auction to offer its users this shopping paradigm that resemblances a live auctioning experience. It was founded in 1995. Pierre Omidyar was the first seller to ever place an item on ebay.com and get it sold. The first product sold was a broken laser pointer which was purchased by an individual who collected such items. This is the magic and beauty of online auction sites: you know that somewhere, out there in this world, there is a man looking for what you are selling.

In the 1990’s, ebay.com got other major competitors like Amazon.com and Yahoo! Auctions, which are still popular today. Other similar site, not as big as ebay.com, but still with a fair share of members, include ePier. This site was started by some students with few resources. It is one of the few sites started from scratch who managed to continue working even today.

Other popular sites in this league include Bidz.com, Ubid.com and Overstock.com. These are all popular auction players with millions of members. These sites sell all kinds of objects like jewelry, bedding objects, photo camera, electronic devices, clothes, bags, insurances and vacations. Their present success is due to the first visionaries who founded the first auction sites, like eBay.com. They have revolutionized the online auction market by allowing people to sell stuff and permitting others to buy cheap, discount quality products. The new investments in technology have made it easier for online auctions to attracts its clients from millions of users all around the world.
